Guzan to Aston Villa?

Chivas USA goalkeeper Brad Guzan has reportedly been the target of a $4 million dollar transfer from Premier League team Aston Villa.  Guzan was earlier rumored to be the object of interest in a transfer to Scottish giant Celtic.

What’s not surpising about this is how American goalkeepers continue to go overseas and have enormous success.  Kasey Keller, Tim Howard, Marcus Hahnemann and Brad Friedel have all proven themselves to be class backstops at the highest levels of international soccer, especially in the Premiership, and Guzan looks to be no exception.

What does interest me about this is how it muddies the water as far as the US national team picture.  To this point Tim Howard has been the assumed next-in-line to be playing in goal when WC ’10 rolls around, and with good reason.  He has played with both Man. U and is now excelling at Everton, and with Kasey Keller and Marcus Hahnemann both retired from international play Howard was clearly the most talented goalie on the roster.  But if Guzan starts to excel in a higher caliber league in addition to his superb national team play so far, there’s no question a competition would be on in training camp.
