US/Mexico preview

Posted on February 6, 2008

My 2 guarantees for tonight’s game?  The Mexican fans will outnumber the US fans, and Landon Donovan will play lights out.  Why?  Because its Mexico.   We could send Landon down to Mexico with nothing but a sleeping bag and trail mix and in 11 days he would be Emperor of the Yucatan.  That’s how much Landon Donovan owns our amigos down sur de la frontier.  The starting 11.

Goal- Tim Howard

Defense- Drew Moor, Michael Parkhurst, Carlos Bocanegra, Heath Pearce

Midfield- Bobby Convey, Ricardo Clark, Michael Bradley, Clint Dempsey

Forward- Jozy Altidore, Landon Donovan

Donovan will play withdrawn mostly, and Bradley and Dempsey will probably alternate going forward from the right side of the field, with Clark playing the Pablo Mastroeni role and challenging possession in the midfield.

I anticipate the US playing very well but having several breakdowns on defense that lead to goals, as well as multiple goal chances that will be squandered by traditional American lack of finishing.  Final:  2-1 Mexico, whetting our appetites for a full strength tilt between these 2 teams when qualifying starts.

Will make MLS look shiny- Altidore, Bradley, Dempsey

Will cause us look at the U-17  team in a panic- Convey, Pearce
