The House Next Door With the Portcullis.

Posted on July 28, 2009

The Striker Swap of 2009 has officially been completed. The deal to send Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Barcelona in exchange for Samuel Eto’o, Alexander Hleb and cash has been finalized, with Ibrahimovic’s unveiling at Camp Nou only in the past by hours.
On the surface of the thing the move looks totally unnecessary. Does Ibrahimovic score more goals than Eto’o? His career numbers say that he does. But one would be hard pressed to find a pundit, coach or player who considers the gap so large that it is worth breaking the bank to acquire one over the other. Zlatan is a world class scorer, and one of the best in the world at it.  Samuel Eto’o can lay claim to the same couplet of adjectives.
And while it lacks any semblance of necessity, this move also seems to be perfectly predictable. We all cast our eyes away from the old familiar to the new glitzy. The house across the street has hardwood floors-want it. The car next to us at the stoplight has built-in wi-fi- get it. The forward in Italy scores goals with his heel- have to have it.
