Everton-Fulham: The Wikipedia preview

The beauty of Wikipedia is that its appeal centers around one of two opposing attitudes:  either in its knowledge sharing mission and its generous attitude towards human nature, or in its possibility for mischief.  If the first appeals most to you, you’re a hippie or you work at Google and read the LEO.  If the second appeals to you, you’re 12 years old and you’ve just defaced the entry for “geothermic energy” with a shout out to your MySpace friends.  In both cases, you should grow up.

But for my mind the Wikipedia is most useful for tracking down odds and ends about random subjects, and generally becoming a terror at Trivial Pursuit.  So what could I glean from the Wikipedia about tomorrow’s opponents, Everton?

1) Everton used to play at Anfield, and were the club that Liverpool FC eventually hived off from.

2) They were founded as St. Domingo’s so that sports could be played when cricket was out of season.

3) Their first (and most famous player) was Dixie Dean, who still holds the record for most goals scored in a season.

4) Wayne Rooney started with Everton before being sold to Manchester United for 27 million pounds.

5) The Everton crest features a lighthouse.

6) Has a tradition of a woman walking around the field before the gameand throwing toffee mints to the crowd.

7) Own and operate a team in the British Basketball League called the Everton Tigers.
