Fulham Forgotten- Eddie Johnson

Posted on December 14, 2009

Not so long ago, Eddie Johnson was not just a rising star in US soccer- he was the rising star.  He scored goals left and right for the Kansas City Wizards and earned himself a shot at becoming the preferred striker for the US national team.  I’m not sure when those opportunities dried up, but after too many games with more running than scoring, they did.  The national team stopped calling, EJ left Kansas City for Fulham and now, a couple of years and several loan deals later, he’s a member of the Fulham forgotten.

In Eddie’s case, the usual questions don’t quite apply because it’s hard to know whether he was properly evaluated in the first place.  It’s not a matter of what happened to make him start to play poorly, because it’s still a little bit of a question as to whether he was ever good to start.  MLS goals are hard to weight against the rest of the world, and the American hype machine can definitely get rolling when it needs to- American soccer fans can testify that the search for the Great American Footballer can take on a Flavor of the Month quality.  I do know that Cardiff City fans love him from his loan deal with them…. that’s got to be good for something.  I just don’t know if he’s going to get much of a shot with Fulham.
